Karin Hayman is a geologist with more than twenty years of professional experience in geology and geophysics, including the fields of environmental consulting, oil and gas exploration, mineralogy, and surface geochemistry. Karin also has ten years of experience in the software industry, having held positions as a Domain Expert, Project Manager, Technical Writer, Software Test Engineer, and Quality Assurance Manager. The software products she was dedicated to include mapping, modeling, and seismic data processing software for geologists and geophysicists, as well as a knowledge-management database application implemented in large-scale, technical support organizations.

Karin has extensive experience performing a variety of field work, individually and as part of a crew, on seismic, geologic, and environmental projects throughout the lower 48 and several regions of Alaska, including the North Slope. She has managed all aspects of field projects, including twenty-person, helicopter-supported crews in Alaska, by determining budgets (up to $1.5M); hiring crew members; on-site supervision of crews; field logistics; estimating fuel needs and coordinating the set-up of remote fuel caches in environmentally-sensitive areas; and sample collection, logging, chain of custody, and shipment.

At J.S. Held, Karin provides geology and mineralogy expertise in support of litigation cases involving asbestos, fibrous zeolites (e.g. erionite), other fibrous minerals, and talc. She conducts research into and incorporates location-specific geology and mineralogy data in exposure assessments. Her research involves interpretation of geologic maps and studies to characterize potential historical exposures of individuals across a wide variety of geographic locations and geologic settings, including many areas of the United States, Mexico, South America, Asia, and the Middle East.

When not focused on matters involving geology and mineralogy, Karin provides scientific support on litigation matters related to industrial hygiene and toxicology. She reviews and summarizes large volumes of information from deposition testimony, court documents, and medical records to produce clear and succinct summary documents that are relied upon by consulting experts for deposition and trial. In addition, she writes and edits expert reports for on-time delivery to clients.
