Philip's product development work includes evaluating health and safety, user testing, and substantiating marketing claims for a wide range of products, including wearable technologies, augmented and virtual reality systems, personal grooming devices, and cosmetic products.
Philip has deep methodological expertise in usability, eye tracking, and psychophysiological measurement, which he leverages to assess user interaction, attention, and cognitive load. His user research combines academic rigor with practical application, allowing him to translate complex psychological principles into actionable insights for product teams, legal stakeholders, and regulators.
Philip received a Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology and an M.S. in Applied Psychology from Clemson University. During his graduate work, he conducted research using psychophysiological recordings and eye tracking to assess workload and attention among unmanned aerial vehicle operators, providing insights to inform the design of command-and-control stations and optimize team role organization. Additionally, he evaluated how a wearable device tracked what people ate and how different cues in the environment affected behavior.
Philip is part of J.S. Held’s state-of-the-art User Research Laboratories (URL), where he collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to generate evidence-based insights across the product lifecycle. His work is informed by both proactive human factors work and reactive failure analysis, enabling a comprehensive understanding of risk, usability, and consumer behavior.
