What truly differentiates J.S. Held is our people — world-class talent driven by a common set of core values. Together, these shared values inspire a culture of integrity, excellence, teamwork, and service.

Get to know Jonathan Clarkson.

Jonathan “Jon” Clarkson has been with J.S. Held for just over a year and is based out of our Tampa, Florida office. Jon joined us as a part of the Bracken Engineering acquisition in early 2018 and works with our Forensic Architecture & Engineering and Environmental, Health, & Safety practice groups. Whether he is performing a ground settlement investigation, geophysical survey, mold assessment, or asbestos services, Jon can always be found with a smile on his face as he tackles the challenges of each new assignment.

“Jon goes out of his way to help however he can,” said David Compton, Operations Manager for North and Central Florida. “His attitude, work ethic, and work product are everything and more that J.S. Held looks for in a team member.”

Known as a “roll up your sleeves” kind of guy, Jon combines his passion for science with a can-do attitude to address complex issues that affect property and infrastructure. His steadfast work ethic, willingness to do whatever is needed, and impeccable character have made life-long impressions upon Jon’s clients and colleagues.

Background

Jon’s path to geology started back in high school where he made the decision to one day become “some sort of scientist.” He spent his summers playing in dirt and making a little extra spending money digging ditches while working on a farm. Organically, Jon’s love of the outdoors and interest in science began to merge at this time and became a strong factor in his choice to pursue a degree in geology from the University of South Florida.

While in school, Jon worked for a forensic engineering firm where he performed geotechnical laboratory and field tests. Following graduation, Jon would spend the next nine years strengthening his understanding of Florida’s geology and how certain events impact the surrounding environment and nearby structures. During this time, Jon conducted numerous sinkhole investigations; ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys, ranging from identifying potential karst activity to locating underground storage tanks (USTs); and asbestos, wetlands, and protected species assessments.

In 2017, Jon joined Bracken Engineering where he led the geology group for just over a year prior to kicking off his tenure with J.S. Held. Since the acquisition, Jon has worked on both structural and environmental projects involving ground settlement, void detection, mold assessments, and environmental remediation.

Professional Interests

Jon has worked on projects nationally and internationally, ranging from sinkholes in Florida to caves in Texas, salt mines in Louisiana, and runways and ports in the Bahamas. His knowledge and exposure to both deleterious soil conditions and building science offer him unique insight into the analysis of matters involving ground subsidence/failures, environmental issues, and industrial hygiene.

Digging into assignments and getting his hands dirty while working with a wide-range of specialized experts are aspects of Jon’s job that he enjoys most. Collecting samples, sifting through data, applying scientific methodologies, and ultimately developing reliable, comprehensive solutions are what inspire his work.

Personal Interests

Away from work, Jon can be found hunting fossils, fly fishing for tarpon, or hiking a local state park with his family of five. When taking a break from the outdoors, Jon enjoys cooking for family and friends on his Big Green Egg and catching up on Game of Thrones with his wife, Kayla.
