The Situation

An adjuster contacted J.S. Held as he was dealing with a difficult and uncooperative client who refused to complete the necessary steps for a claim. He was asked to complete a schedule of loss for all non-restorable contents affected by a fire on his property. He had also been assigned a few different adjusters through the course of the claim. J.S. Held’s consultant was advised that the client was frustrated and upset and was tasked with working with him to complete his schedule of loss.

How We Advised

Once approved by the adjuster, J.S. Held’s consultant reached out to the homeowner, allowing him to talk and express his frustrations. When he finished speaking, our consultant reviewed his complaints with him once more to fully understand the issue. Maintaining a calm and positive tone, our consultant explained the contents portion of the claim as it related to the need for him to create a list.

Once the client was afforded a chance to vent his frustrations and feel heard and seen, he became agreeable and worked with our consultant to get his schedule of loss completed and move the claim forward.

This scenario was a strong reminder that it is important to have consideration for claimants’ trauma and to make sure they feel validated in the process of resolving their claims.
