J.S. Held Acquires Shechter & Everett to Expand Forensic Accounting Capabilities for Family Law Disputes in Florida
Read MoreFollowing an inspection from Health & Safety, a client was issued an improvement notice relating to substances being handled and stored at its premises due to non-compliance with the full requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH). The client was advised to seek the support of a chartered occupational hygienist to review their current COSHH arrangements and documented controls.
J.S. Held’s expert occupational hygienists were appointed to visit the site and undertook a review of the client’s current arrangements.
The main challenge with this site was that it was a handling and storage facility with a variety of substances present, none of which were used at the facility. In addition, site employees would not have necessarily known what they could be handling during their working shift. Each potential substance or group of substances needed specific controls to be employed—relating to improved handling and safer storage arrangements—with a focus on eliminating potential unplanned exposure routes. Full, appropriate substance-specific emergency preparedness procedures had also been potentially overlooked.
J.S. Held’s experts developed clear, simple recommendations and improved controls in consultation with the client to ensure that they were easily implemented. These included:
All existing and additional employed controls were subsequently identified and documented with the COSHH assessment for the substances identified to be present. These were then briefed out to all staff through appropriate information, instruction, and training sessions. This was critical for ensuring the new procedures were fully understood and followed.
After the COSHH assessments had been reviewed, updated, implemented, and briefed accordingly, J.S. Held experts further recommended and supported the development of a safe operating procedure (SOP) to cover all day-to-day facility activities. This was fully documented in consultation with the employees for continuous improvement and safer working processes at the facility.
As a result of this work, the client achieved satisfactory compliance with COSHH regulations, including a safer, trained, and more informed workforce.
