The Situation

A multinational technology company was developing a safety feature for virtual reality products, but the feature consumed a large amount of device battery power, significantly reducing total usage time. The client needed to assess whether decreasing the visual quality of the feature to prolong device runtime would impact the user experience and, most importantly, user safety. Our team was retained to independently evaluate the safety of the client's product under different parameters affecting its visual quality.

How We Advised

To appropriately evaluate product safety, our team needed to consider a variety of behaviors and circumstances that could possibly present a risk to user safety, including:

  • Navigating around physical objects in a room.
  • Stepping up or down.
  • Carrying or moving physical objects (e.g., a glass of water).
  • Reacting to an emergent hazard (e.g., someone walking into the user's path).
  • Making precise movements (e.g., plugging something into an outlet).

Our team designed a series of tests to measure how visual quality impacts product users' ability to perform these types of behaviors. We set up an obstacle course, developed computerized tasks to assess reaction times, outfitted study participants with motion capture sensors to track real-time body movement and posture during the test, and interviewed study participants about their experience with the product.
Our work provided the client with scientific, legally defensible data they needed to ensure product safety and improve the user experience of their product.
