Mark Tylicki is based out of Cleveland, Ohio, and joined J.S. Held in 2018 as a Senior Consultant within our Building Consulting practice. Prior to 2020, Mark’s role focused on commercial losses; however, he now examines a wide range of losses, from small residential to large commercial manufacturing losses.
Mark describes himself as personable, getting along well with others, and enjoying being around people from all walks of life. He emphasizes the importance of this trait in his current role, given the large number of people involved in a typical project. “I’m not shy to strike up a conversation with anybody, and I think it’s helped me in the insurance and restoration arena.”

Prior to joining J.S. Held, Mark worked as an insurance restoration contractor (water and fire), estimator, project manager, and marketer for eight years. Before that, he was a general contractor for 14 years and has experience in custom home and condominium building, as well as retail and commercial construction.
Mark grew up surrounded by family members working in the construction industry and started his first construction job in high school. After high school graduation, he initially went to college to study Computer Science. Still, he decided to pursue a career in construction when asked by one of his cousins, who was already in the business. “I was young when I started [in construction],” Mark says, “I learned quickly and was willing to learn on the fly, without previous experience. That helped me develop great organization and problem-solving abilities.”
Mark eventually established his own company, which he operated for a while before moving on to work for a larger property restoration company. “I was brought on as an expert to apply my commercial expertise,” he explains. Years later, while working as a water and fire restoration contractor, Mark began meeting J.S. Held consultants, who often clerked the larger losses he was overseeing. “One of these consultants, Trey Quelette, introduced me to what it was like to be a consultant versus a contractor,” says Mark, “He eventually offered me a position with J.S. Held. It took him about a year, but he got me on board.”
These days, Mark works with other practice groups within J.S. Held more than ever and on a wide range of projects, as well as an increasing number of projects with overlapping issues or client needs. Currently, Mark is the only expert in his role and skill set based in the Cleveland, OH area, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the local building consulting team. Mark enjoys creating connections between clients and other experts when complex cases arise. “It’s nice being able to add value to these relationships on the spot,” he says, “One of the ways I can help clients is by introducing them to experts with the specialized expertise they need.”
Over the last year, Mark has been involved in a large number of assignments with fire damage. He has performed damage assessments on everything from steel mill fires to nursing home fires to everyday house fires. It’s not unusual for all to occur in a single week or even just a few days. He enjoys the daily change of scenery and says, “I’m rarely at a desk, and I take great pride in the quality of the work product and service I deliver to clients.”
Mark is also regularly engaged as a project monitor and provides oversight as “things get put back together.” In addition to monitoring, he has a passion for the detailed work of estimating, and he enjoys the realm of construction overall because it encompasses all his interests and thoroughly leverages his expertise.
Mark enjoys spending time watching his children’s sports teams, which run throughout the year, and spending most of his weekends at the lake house with his family. “We’re there almost every week during the spring and summer months,” he says, “We really enjoy all aspects of being in and around the lake.”
