How much is too much? How clean is, well, clean? As a toxicologist in our Environmental, Health & Safety practice, Nadia Moore answers these questions on a regular basis. “Everything in our world can be considered a poison; it’s how much we are exposed that determines if we have an adverse effect,” says Nadia.
Nadia assesses the health impacts from potential contaminants in workplace exposures, household exposures, and consumer products. She also determines acceptable occupational exposure and impurity levels in consumer products and uses weight-of-evidence analysis of historical scientific data to gauge present-day conclusions.

In high school, Nadia developed a passion for science, biology in particular. She knew early on that she wanted to focus on applied sciences rather than the theoretical and was interested in using chemistry, biology, and genetics together to solve problems. This ultimately motivated her to earn her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington.
Following college, Nadia worked at the Battelle Memorial Institute as a chemist, where she focused on supporting the inhalation laboratory in the study of toxicological assessments. She went on to achieve her PhD in Toxicology from the University of Washington in Seattle, after which she became a Study Director and the Toxicology Discipline Leader for National Toxicology Program Inhalation Studies at Battelle. In 2013, Battelle moved the inhalation testing facility to a different state, and Nadia transitioned to a consulting role at Veritox, Inc., where she worked for 5 years.
Nadia joined J.S. Held in 2019 as part of the Veritox, Inc. acquisition and is based in Redmond, Washington. As a subject matter expert in toxicology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry, Nadia evaluates potential health effects from a wide range of chemical and physical agents (including asbestos, pesticides, solvents, vapors, particulate matter, metals, and microbial agents), diverse exposure scenarios (including environmental, occupational, and residential), and all routes of exposure—inhalation, oral (ingestion), and percutaneous (skin).
She routinely assesses whether exposure to a chemical or physical agent has caused (or can cause) an injury. This work includes, for example, blood alcohol concentrations, carbon monoxide exposures, and drinking water contaminants.
“My previous positions strengthened my knowledge in carcinogenicity testing, report writing, and my ability to work in and contribute to multidisciplinary teams. My passion for solving complex matters and providing innovative solutions to clients inspires me daily,” said Nadia.
Nadia enjoys getting outdoors as much as possible — biking, hiking, and skiing — but when the weather isn’t ideal, she opts for indoor training on her Peloton bike.

Nadia currently serves as Secretary of the Emergency Response Planning Guidelines Working Group (ERPG WG) of the American Industrial Hygiene Association Foundation and is finishing her 2021-2026 tenure on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Toxicology, which spanned service as Vice President and President. Having previously served through the presidential chain of the Pacific Northwest Association of Toxicologists, she remains active in the society and engages students in the field of toxicology.
